5 Magical Spices for Better Digestion – Ayurveda Medicine

almonds-bright-close-up-971078~75% of Americans are suffering from digestive discomfort, including me! This includes symptoms of gas, bloating, indigestion, abdominal pain, diarrhea and constipation.

I am very interested in holistic and natural medicines and most recently have been doing a lot of reading on Ayurveda.  is an ancient Indian practice focusing on the connection between the mind, body, and nature. For thousands of years, 5 spices have been used in Ayurveda that have had amazing success in aiding and relieving digestive concerns: coriander, cardamom, cumin fennel and ginger.

This is an example of resetting digestion, rather than brewing dependency on digestive aids.

Coriander Seed is a cooling spice and can be used for heartburn. It is also a naturally prevents and relieves gas from the intestinal tract.

Cardamom is part of the ginger family and make foods easier to digest. Cardamom can reduce extreme acidity of many foods and caffeinated drinks like coffee. It also reduces mucus, gas and bloating in the stomach and small intestine.

Cumin Seed might be the most powerful digestive aid, known for boosting digestion and reducing gas and bloating. It is effective at cooling and strengthening the digestive system and supports healthy microbes and detoxifies of the intestinal tract.

Fennel helps prevent gas and bloating and is also a lymph mover, resulting in radiant skin inside and out. Fennel seeds are one of the best promote purity and balance and beneficial for intestinal cramping and nausea.

Ginger is beneficial for heating upper digestion but also cooling and soothing for the lower digestion. Studies have proven that ginger supports healthy microbes, the intestinal wall, and is a digestive stimulant for absorbing nutrients.

Interestingly enough, chewing a handful of cumin, fennel, cardamom and coriander seeds post meal in India is still quite common.

So how do we use the spices? I make a simple tea that works wonders on my bloated gut. Best to use 2X per day, 30 minutes before lunch and dinner.

Directions: Put 1/2 teaspoon each of coriander seeds, cumin seeds and fennel seeds in four cups of water. Bring to a boil, let steep, strain and drink. Coriander, cumin, fennel tea is cooling and soothing for the mind and body.
